Пылай, наше Космо!
Один из вариантов происхождения имен Золотых Святых.
Obviously, I do not (and cannot) know what Kurumada-Sensei was thinking when he chose the names for his Saints, and who or what he named them after. Yet, it’s easy to notice how most of those names belong to actual geographical places. This occurrence always delighted me, and strongly piqued my interest… Hence, the post.
If you know more, or if you see I’ve said something incorrect, you’re welcome –no, begged even!- to correct me, and add your own info. ^_^ It always nice to collaborate together for the fandom. ♥♥♥
Aries Saint:
SHION = shi'-on (shi'on; Codex Vaticanus Siona, Codex Alexandrinus Seian)Hebrew for “ruin”. Mentioned in the bible, it is a town in the territory of Issachar, situated between Deburi/Daberath, and Jafa/Japhia a few miles northwest of Mount Tabor. Mentioned in the Book of Joshua, Chapter 19:19 (“And Hapharaim, and Shion, and Anaharath,”), it is possibly identical with the modern village Sain (Khirbet Sha'in). (my guess is that Shion also means something in Japanese, but… Yeah. *lol*).
читать дальшеMU = Mu (uppercase Μ, lowercase μ
is the 12th letter of the Greek alphabet pronounced "mew" (/mju/). In the system of Greek numerals it has a value of 40. The symbol “μ” is used with many different meanings in mathematics (see the lovely Möbius function Neme was always boring you all with) and physics. Mu may also refer to the Muonium's atomic symbol; a Chinese unit of area (mǔ市亩, of metric value 666 2/3 m²
. It is also used as a response to certain koans in Zen Buddhism, with the intent to indicate that the question itself was wrong.
But (and that’s what Neme is delighted to point out) Mu is also the name mythical land which was foundered by a cataclysm, in a similar fashion to Atlantis and Lemuria, (with which the Continent of Mu is sometimes identified).
The Lost Continent of Mu was originally cited in the writings of the antiquarian Augustus Le Plongeon in the 19th century. Conducted his own investigations of the Maya ruins in Yucatán, Monsieaur Le Plongeon apparently translated an ancient writing retelling the cataclysm that had sunk Mu to the death of the sea, and pinpointed the survivors of Mu as the founders of the Maya civilization.
Similarly, James Churchward (1852–1936) claimed to have discovered the existence of the long lost continent of Mu from his reading of ‘the Naacal tablets’ he came across in India (although he also claimed it happened in Tibet). It located the continent in the Pacific Ocean, and pointed the Hawaiian Islands and Easter Island as the sole traces left of it. The survivors were the ancestors of all the remaining peoples of the world, who carried elements of their culture with them. His books on the Lost continent are (alas!) considered but works of fiction, are classed under 'New Age' or 'Religion and Spirituality' bookshelves.
Mu was also the name of the sunken land in Brasseur de Bourbourg’s ‘translation’ of the Troano Codex. Mu is identified with Lemuria in the Illuminatus! trilogy of Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, and Martin Gardner did the same in his book Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science.
In 1985 “ruins" of Mu have been discovered off the coast of Yonaguni, in Okinawa, Japan; albeit geologists generally believe that the Pyramid found underwater is not of man-made origin, studies are being conducted by the Morien Institute (read more here: www.morien-institute.org/yonaguni_schoch1.html)
Taurus Saint.
ALDEBARAN = The name Aldebaran (ăl-dĕb'ər-ən) is from the Arabic meaning “follower (of the Pleiades).” One of the 20 brightest stars in the sky (nearly 150 times more luminous than the Sun), Aldebaran is a cool orange-red giant star in the constellation of Taurus, and also the brightest of the group: with its colour and brilliance it is aptly considered to be eye of the celestial Bull. Also known as α (Alfa) Tauri, this star creates a binary-star system with a cool dwarf star.
Gemini Saint.
SAGA = The name Saga has several uses and meanings, all of which very, very fascinating. I will mention only a few. What delighted me the most is that Saga is (like Aiolos and Aprhodite) the name of a deity. In Norse mythology, Sága or Saga was the daughter of Odin and attendant of Frigg, the wife of Odin (sometimes the two are identified as one). She was the all-knowing goddess and the goddess of poetry, poetic arts and history; actually “Sagas” (long songs or histories of family and heroic deeds) are named for her. Saga resides in Sokvabek/Sokkuabekk, the Hall Of Sunk Benches or Sinking Beach over the stream of time.
She is mentioned in the Grímnismál, where she sits alongside Odin, drinking from golden goblets.
“Saga” is also one of the 13'350 asteroids named officially by the IAU (International Astronomical Union). Its complete name is “1163 Saga”; while its provisional designation was “1930 BA”
KANON = Kanon (♥
is a microscopically small island in the group of the Marshall Islands, USA. Latitude (DMS): 10° 16' 0 N, Longitude (DMS): 169° 58' 60 E. In the Saint Seiya anime/manga, Kanon Island (or Canon Island) is erroneously located in the Mediterranean, and it’s the place where Ikki goes to restore his energies/thaw his frozen limb).
[EDIT] Also from this site:
The boy's name Kannon is pronounced KAN-en. It is of Japanese origin. Variant of Kuan-yin, the Buddhist deity of mercy. Kannan (Sanskrit) is a variant of Krishna.
Cancer Saint
DEATHMASK = popular belief will have this name being a fake, a nickname that the character gave himself, or was given by someone to use instead of his own name. (Duh.). From wikipedia: “A death mask is a plaster or wax cast made of a person’s face following death. Death masks may be mementos of the dead, or be used for creation of portraits. It is sometimes possible to identify portraits that have been painted from death masks, because of the characteristic slight distortions of the features caused by the weight of the plaster during the making of the mould.
In the seventeenth century, it was common for death masks to be used as part of the effigy of the deceased, displayed at state funerals. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries they were also used to permanently record the features of corpses for the purposes of identification. This function was later replaced by photography.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_mask
Leo Saint
AIOLIA = Another geographical place. Another Island, this time situated in the Mediterranean. ♥In the Book 10 of Homer’s Odissey, Odysseus and his men land on Aiolia Island, domain of Aiolos Hippotadês, the wind king.
According to wikipedia, Aiolia (quote): “was an area that comprised the west and northwestern region of Asia Minor, mostly along the coast, and also several offshore islands (particularly Lesbos), where the Aeolian Greek city-states were located.” Which is something your Neme totally ignored. :0
Virgo Saint
SHAKA = again, this name has various meaning, but we fans know for almost sure that Kurumada-sensei named his Virgo Saint after Siddhartha Gautama, the historical founder of Buddhism. Siddhartha claimed (or better, gained) the name of Buddha after a quest that led him to renounce to his earthly possession and undergo a spiritual elevation. (for more info on Siddhartha, Neme warmly recommends the text “Little Buddha”)
[EDIT] Additional info provided by blue_cage
Shaka is how Buddha is called in Japan, or at least that's what my references told me. The page has a nice brief outline of Buddha's life, including main tenets, etc. Origins and significance of Gold Saints’s names.
Libra Saint
DOHKO = Dohko is the Sami/Lappish for "there".
[EDIT] Additional info provided by pharaoh_horus
Dohko, translated into Chinese means "young tiger," hence the tiger tatoo on his back.
Scorpio Saint.
MILO = Guessed it already? It’s another Island! ♥ (Neme is, obviously, TOO EASILY amused…) It’s a Greek Island (Latitude 36.6755556; Longitude 24.4477778) the very same one where, in the month of February 1820, was discovered the statues universally known as “Venus of Milo”.
There also exists a Pulo Milo Island in India(Longitude: 93.6666667; Latitude: 7.4), yet we feel confident that the Scorpio Saint was named after the Greek “Milo Island”, the one in the situated in the Aegean Sea.
Sagittarius Saint
AIOLOS = The Greek word Aiolos means glittering, and in Greek mythology there are three personages of this name. Yet their identities are so often confused, that it is impossible say which is which, and who did what. However, the most famous Aiolos (or Aeolus) was the God of winds, storms and tempests.
Again, I find myself highly amused (and PLEASED…) by the fact that the Sagittarius is the only Saint, other than Saga, whose birth name is the same as a deity’s (Fandom beliefs will have it that Pisces’s Aphrodite’s name is not a birth name but a nickname, given how highly improbable it is that a Swedish boy is named after a Greek Female Deity).
In Homer, however, Aeolus Hippotadês (cfr: “son of Hippotes”, or “reiner of Horses”, as the winds are said to be in horse form by Valerius Flaccus, Argonautica 1.574) is neither the god nor the father of the winds, but the King of the Aiolia (Aeolian) Island; a man whom the Gods called friend, and to which Zeus had given the power to rule the Winds. Diodorus Siculus, in the Library of History 5.7.5 says of him: “He was, they say, pious and just and kindly as well in his treatment of strangers; […] and it was because of his very great piety that he was called a friend of the gods.”
Later poets regarded King Aiolos as being one and the same with the god of the winds (Ovid Metamorphoses i. 264, xi. 748 xiv. 223; Valerius Flaccus. i. 575; Quintus Smyrnaeus. xiv. 475).
Capricorn Saint
SHURA = Shura is an Arabic word for "consultation". It is believed to be the method by which pre-Islamic Arabian tribes selected leaders and made major decisions, and constitutes one of the four cardinal principles in the Islamic perspective on socio-political organization. The other three are justice, equality, and human dignity.
In 1971 Toshio Matsumoto directed a drama movie by this name.
[EDIT] Also, from this site:
The boy's and girl's name Shura is of Russian origin. Diminutive form of Alexander (Greek) "man's defender." Used in Russia as a nickname for a man.
[EDIT] Additional info found following tips by [info]lauand: Shura (修羅
is the abbreviated form Ashura. Among the Indo-Iranians, the term asura, ahura in Avestan, originally referred to a divine being on a par with the gods, in which sense it is preserved in Ahura Mazda, the name of the supreme deity in Zoroastrianism. (taken from this site)
Aquarius Saint
CAMUS = Camus is a typical French surname: Albert Camus was a French author, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. Charles-Étienne Camus was a French mathematician specializing on mechanics and cartography.
Camus is also a French Adjective (that Neme can translate in Italian, but not in English… *coughs*)
And, to corroborate Neme’s delightful theory of “Their names are mostly names of grographical places” Camus Town, in Angus, is the place where, in 1010 Scots eventually overpowered Danes.
Pisces Saint
APHRODITE = Probably a nickname the Pisces Saint (or someone for him)chose to go by. We ignore his birth name. Aphrodite is the Greek Great Goddess of love, lust, and beauty.
“Aphrodite” is also one of the 13'350 asteroids named officially by the IAU (International Astronomical Union). Its complete name is “1388 Aphrodite”; while its provisional designation was “1935 SS”. (c) necchan
